Get Noticed!
If you want to get noticed on the Web, you want to be on page one of the major search engines – Google, Yahoo and Bing (formerly Microsoft’s Windows Live Search), and preferably Google, as it currently handles 75% of the web’s searches.
Webworld has the skill, experience and the specialized SEO tools to help your website rise in the search engine rankings. This is not an overnight process but the results can be quite dramatic whether your goal is increased transparency or increased profits.
Relevant Keywords Are the Foundation
The key to getting this traffic is a list of targeted keywords. Ideally, the step of identifying these keywords is done before your website is even built. These keywords must meet the following criteria:
They are related to your products or services. They actually get traffic. There is no point in being the number one search item for say, “power baby bottle washers” if no one ever uses that term in a search.
Once you have your keywords, these must be used to optimize your on-page and off-page factors so that Google and the other search engines will recognize your website as an important one.
On-Page Factors
The most important on-page factors are the HTML page title and the content itself. Both should use your keywords in a natural way that makes sense both to human visitors and Google. This means your site has to have good, original content and keyword-rich page titles. Never waste your home page title space with something like “Welcome to Our Site”. A company that rents luxury beach homes in Florida, for example, would want to have a home page title of something like “Luxury Florida Beach Homes for Rent”.
Off-Page Factors
Off-page factors indicate how well-respected a website is by its visitors and other websites. These “votes” take the form of links to a website that show that a website is trusted for a particular area. All links are not equal though. The more Google respects a website, the more weight is given to one of its links to another site. For example, a website can get a big boost from a link from an educational or government website (i.e. a .edu or .gov site) or from a major corporation like Microsoft or Adobe.
Web 2.0 Social Media
Web 2.0 social media websites like Digg, Twitter and FaceBook can be used to boost one’s search engine ranking, but can generate dramatic increases in traffic all on their own. For example, a listing on Digg’s first page of hot news items can create a flood of traffic overnight. The various social media sites generally fall into the following categories:
Social networking sites like FaceBook, LinkedIN and MySpace – These are sites that enable one to stay connected to friends, re-establish connections to old friends, connect to like-minded people on an infinity variety of topics, and to promote products and services. Social bookmarking sites like Digg, Delicious and StumbleUpon – These provide a way to generate an ever growing number of quality links to the pages in a website. Content sharing sites like Wikipedia, Squidoo, Buzzle – These sites enable people to write and publish articles on areas of personal or professional interest. Many articles published on these sites enjoy high search engine ranking, and thus can generate additional traffic for websites.
